Color Schemes
Here are some color schemes that have a good contrast between the text color and background color.

It's been a while since I looked at this page and those colors look far from subtle. Here's an excellent free online color picker utility that I found or color picker in US speak: Color Picker
Using color to Sell
One of the secrets of selling on the web is to stick with a white background and red, green, blue and black colors. However, I prefer to lose a few sales by enjoying playing with color schemes.

Fonts
I only use 3 fonts in my web pages. This is because they look good on the eye and virtually everyone has them installed on their computer so they see what you see. These fonts are:
- ARIAL arial
- VERDANA verdana VER veranda how to spell?
- COMIC SANS comic sans - useful for a handwriting effect like your signature.
