The Top Search Engines
Submit your web site to the top search engines to get free visitor traffic. Search engine submission is quick and easy but you need to prepare your web site first. Here's what you need to know.
Search Engine Optimization
It's a competitive world out there with millions of web sites battling for top ranking in the search results.
The good news is that many webmasters don't bother to optimize their sites or don't know how.
It can seem like a there's too much to learn about search engine optimization and it is difficult to get right.
However, with a few simple techniques and some common sense it's easy to produce a website that will be search engine friendly.
The first step is to design your web pages to focus on keywords and phrases that people are searching for. The most important page is your main page called index.html
This page will contain links to the other pages on your web site.
A good site will contain many inter-linked pages of useful content. Each page will be focused on key words and phrases on a particular topic relevant to the overall theme of the site.
Keywords and Phrases
Based on the theme of your web site, do some research to identify keywords and phrases that you will focus on.
Tip: Use the key phrase as the page name, title and heading.

In the body of the web page you should aim for around 250 words of text. Try not to overuse your keywords otherwise it'll be considered spam and penalised accordingly!
Meta Tags
The "keywords" meta tag used to be important but nowadays the search engines tend to analyse the content of your site and often ignore this meta tag.
I still think it's worth including though. The meta tags go between the "head" tags of your html code.
Here's the format:
<head>
<title>Key Phrase</title>
<meta name="description" content="Description
of the web page">
<meta name="keywords" content="Key words and
phrases">
</head>
Seperate the keywords and phrases like this: phrase1, phrase2
Misc Optimization Tips
- Links to your web site from other quality sites will help your search engine ranking.
- Using keywords of the linked-to page in hypertext links helps show relevance.
- Use keywords in image "alt" tags.
- Get your website listed in human-edited directories like Yahoo! and DMOZ.
- Avoid too much HTML above your keywords and contents.
- Get your own hosted domain name, don't use URL forwarding.
- Avoid splash pages, flash and frames.
Submitting Your Web Site
Once you've created your keyword-rich web site and filled it with useful content, it's time to submit your site!
You only need to submit your site once to each search engine. They will periodically revisit your site to check for changes.
Submit each page in turn. It's a good idea to read the individual guidelines for each search engine to make sure you comply with their submission policies.
It takes a few weeks usually before your site will be listed in search results so you need to be patient.
